What happens when an elected official proposes a 23 percent tax hike a week before his election?
You would think the official would lose – big time.
Unless, he is able to explain the reasons clearly.
On October 30th, I proposed my 2008 budget. The outgoing Town Board had depleted the town’s fund balance, increased spending, cut taxes two years in a row. They were working hard to defeat me. My proposed budget included a 23 percent tax hike. The tax increase was unavoidable.
I was nervous. How would the voters react? I called Willy Gissen, and he immediately got to work, helping me prepare a letter explaining what happened.
The results: I won re-election with 60 percent of the vote.
Thank you Willy Gissen and Cut It Out Communications for helping me get my message out and to effectively explain to voters the reasons for the tax hike.
